9 August Meeting

  • Helping our young people is a major focus for Kaikohe Rotary. One of our major initiatives is providing scholarships for local students to sail on the tall ship R Tucker Thompson. It is an experience of a lifetime for many of the young people who get to enjoy life under sail on our local sailing ship. They learn leadership skills and the importance of teamwork, get to visit some of our offshore islands to do conservation work, as well as learning sailing skills.
  • On Wednesday Kaikohe Rotary heard from four students who took part in recent voyages on the R Tucker Thompson. Rangiwhenua Te Haara-Hohepa from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kaikohe, Amy Hudson from Kaikohe Christian School and Nikki Henry-Edmonds and Ruahine Kea from Northland College all said it was a fabulous experience that they would have no hesitation in recommending to their friends and schoolmates. They talked about the challenges of storms, trying to sleep in rolling seas, climbing 30-metre-high masts to change sails and having a compulsory swim each morning before breakfast - even in mid-winter.

  • It was clear to Rotarians that four teens learned lots from the experience and the cost of getting them to sea was money well spent. Kaikohe Rotary will continue support more local teens to enjoy the experience of life under sail on the R Tucker Thompson.
