2 November Meeting

  • The design of the products we buy and use everyday is something we mostly take for granted. However, whether it is a smartphone, a car, a television set or a coffee table, a huge amount of work goes into making a product look and feel fantastic. On Wednesday night Peter Haythornthwaite told Kaikohe Rotarians what design is all about and why it is vital for companies to take seriously.

  • Peter has been involved in design for more than 40 years. For more than two decades he ran his own company Peter Haythornthwaite Design which he sold to his staff in 2000. Since then he has been actively involved in the field of design education and how its is taught in Australia and New Zealand. He also spent a number of years working in New York. Earlier this year Peter was recognised for his work by being named a Member of Order of New Zealand (MNZM) in the Queen's 90th Birthday Honours.

  • Peter says good design goes well beyond the product and encompasses the full customer experience, including retail, communications (eg website) and use. Products need to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. But design also extends to company organisation and structure. Well-designed companies produce well-designed products and services and have many satisfied customers.

  • After many years living in big cities, Peter and his wife have moved to Waimate North. But Peter says he is as busy as ever.

  • Thank you Peter for a stimulating presentation. You're most welcome to join us again.
