26 October Meeting

  • Mike and Alison Shaw have been well known in our community since they came to Kaikohe 30 years ago. Mike is a local pastor and board member of the Kaikohe Christian School.

  • Mike's congregation has always had a focus on helping the community. This week he told Kaikohe Rotary how the men in their congregation took the lead on the issue of sexual violence.

  • Mike says sexual violence is a male problem. Most perpetrators are men. Most violence occurs within the family and is often used as a form of control. Fear means many incidents go unreported. Common misconceptions that sexual offenders are shifty-looking men with white trench coats are wide of the mark.

  • Sexual offenders are mostly average members of the community. Sexual violence occurs in all demographic and ethnic groups., regardless of income. The only common thread is that most offenders are me. Therefore it is up to men to change their behavior.

  • Mike's congregation stepped up after a challenge from anti-sexual violence campaigner Denise Ritchie. They formed a local branch of Massive (Men against Sexual Violence) and helped Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis as he walked from Waitakere to Cape Reinga to increase awareness of sexual violence.

  • It's fantastic that Mike and his team are helping to highlight an issue that could otherwise be hidden. We hope their work will help more children and young people grow up without fear to become productive and valued members of our community. Kaikohe Rotary wishes Mike and Massive well in its future work.
