18 May Meeting Report - Guest Speaker John Putt

  • John Putt got stuck in Vanuatu in 1979 when his yacht struck rocks and was holed up for repairs. That started a love affair with the country that continues to this day. John spent a number of years teaching carpentry and joinery skills to young men and women.

  • Vanuatu's houses are not especially robust and after many were devastated after last year's cyclone John got a call asking him to be part of a rescue mission to rebuild 60 houses in six weeks. John had to educate the locals on the importance of good framing and bracing in ensuring that rebuilt houses are sturdy and will last longer than the next cyclone.

  • John said the situation in Vanuatu has changed a lot in recent years and unlike in the '80s and '90s supplies of materials including timber are readily available. But the real problem is most people in Vanuatu are poor and can only afford the cheapest materials and the most rudimentary building techniques. But John's work means there is a group able to pass on his teachings and the skills on how to repair and rebuild damaged houses. That means more of the many rebuilding jobs will be done properly.

  • John's presentation was illustrated with a vast array of photos and slides. A full attendance of Kaikohe Rotarians enjoyed his presentation and thanks are due to John Vujcich for inviting him.
