28 April Meeting Report - John and Elodie’s visit to Vanuatu

  • Rotary District 9910's Conference earlier this month was scheduled to be held in Vanuatu. But at the last minute it was transferred to Tauranga after Air New Zealand cancelled all its services to Port Vila and other airlines followed suit.

  • Kaikohe Rotarian John Vujcich had already booked to go to the conference with his wife Elodie on Air Vanuatu. The trip was also to see a European Commission beef initiative. They decided to make the trip despite the conference was no longer there.

  • John told Kaikohe Rotary this week that Vanuatu was slowly recovering from Cyclone Pam which devastated large swathes of the country last year. But recovery is being hindered by the country's dependence on tourism, which took a big hit following the cyclone and is now suffering again following Air New Zealand's withdrawal.

  • The second issue holding back the country is corruption. Virtually nothing happens in Vanuatu. Corruption goes right to the top, with more than half of the country's MPs in jail.

  • Rotary is held in high esteem for its cyclone relief work including providing desks for schools. John visited Vanuatu's three Rotary clubs and joined with one of them in opening a container of hospital supplies that had been sitting on the wharf for four months - probably because the required backhanders hadn't been paid.

  • John and Elodie had a great time during their 12-day stay, even though they had to endure five earthquakes. And despite Air New Zealand's refusal to fly in or out of Vila, they had no qualms about the runway, especially since several members of the Fulton Hogan repair crew were from Northland.

  • Elizabeth Killen thanked John and Elodie for a fascinating and informative presentation.
