27 January Meeting Report

  • Even though Shaun Reilly was born in Collingwood, he has been in living in Kaikohe for more than 40 years. Shaun's been a farmer, a champion plougher, a photographer and a journalist. But Sean is best known as being a passionate champion for Kaikohe. On Wednesday Shaun shared his views on how Kaikohe could rise again to once again be the hub of the Mid North.

  • Sean says Top Energy's proposal for a geothermal power station will provide the Kaikohe area with low-cost energy. When the power comes on stream Kaikohe will no longer be dependent on the National Grid and instead will be a net exporter of electricity. it will also provide opportunities for businesses in forestry in setup, making use of low-cost energy and the area's plentiful supply of labour.

  • Shaun believes Far North District Council has a big part to play in Kaikohe's future. He says the decision to move the planning and building teams to Kerikeri was a big mistake and Shaun believes he was personally responsible for stopping former Mayor Wayne Brown's plans to move the council's headquarters to Kerikeri. Shaun wants the staff now in Kerikeri to come back to Kaikohe. He wants the council to join forces with Ngapuhi to build a new headquarters building at the former Kaikohe Hotel site.

  • Councillor John Vujcich thanked Shaun and told his passionate Kaikohe audience that Sean had given everyone plenty to think about.
