29 July Meeting Report

  • On Wednesday we welcomed Dr Roger Milner, a well known local GP (retired) who is campaigning to have defibrillators available at marae in the Kaikohe area. He says defibrillators can provide lifesaving treatment to heart attack victims in the period before an ambulance or paramedics can arrive.

  • In the old days each unit cost about $3,000. But now they can be bought for around $1,200 each, although there is an additional cost for batteries that need to be replaced about every five years.

  • Roger brought along Mike McGivern who offers free two-hour training courses to staff where defibrillators are located. Mike said the Copthorne Hokianga recently installed a unit. Within three weeks staff who had been trained used it to treat their groundsman after he had a heart attack at work.

  • While, there are a number of units in Kaikohe (you check their locations on www.aedlocations.co.nz), there are some places (e.g. supermarkets, the Warehouse and council office and library) where they are absent. He said international best practice encourages their installation at High Schools and Golf Clubs.

  • It was an interesting presentation and gave Rotarians plenty of food for thought.
