22 July Guest Speaker

  • Last Wednesday we welcomed Elaine and Steve Goldthorpe from Seizure Support Northland. They came from England 20 years ago and Elaine started work as a teacher. Very quickly she became a special needs teacher and became familiar with the needs of students with epilepsy.

  • Seizure Support works closely with the Epilepsy Society and has a focus on educating the public about what epilepsy is and how they can help sufferers control its symptoms. Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects between 1000 and 3000 Northlanders. While many people think epilepsy affects young people, its triggers tend to become more active later in life.

  • Having epilepsy means having seizures that come on without warning. But these seizures pass and sufferers can lead productive lives, although epilepsy can limit their ability to drive, consequently limiting their independence.

  • Seizure Support is working with Northland Lions clubs to help get their book Ben's Buddies into schools. Kaikohe Rotary is happy to assist with respect to Kaikohe.

  • Thanks, Elaine and Steve, for a most interesting address. We hope you will come back soon.
