4 December Meeting Report

  • The meeting sadly observed the passing of ex president Frank Duxfield.

  • Guest speaker Andrea Scown welcomed.

  • Apologies: Ray, Val, Helen & John Ellis, Don, Jim Shaw.

  • Make ups: 6 who attended the joint meeting at Kaitaia, and those who assisted with the street parade in Kaikohe.

  • On Friday 6th December the pioneer village will be the venue for a TV3 production. 12 volunteers are required for security 4pm – 9.30pm. Open to the public from 5.30.

  • Conference reminder - early bird bookings are now closed (but see links above).

  • Fran, the exchange student based at Papamoa, will be in our area shortly.

  • Reminder for the end of year function on the 18th December.

  • An application from Buenos Aires for an exchange student. Glenis emailed details for Tommi. Keith spoke in more depth about the application.

  • Bill advised that bbq tables may be manufactured at the prison. Two concrete pads will be required before Xmas.

  • CYFS Social Worker Andrea Scown was guest speaker.

    • Andrea outlined a plan for Northland College to provide services for students. Her current caseload is 109 youth, and the volume is increasing.

    • A facility is under development for students’ health checks at the college. This will take the form of a Wellness Centre. The first meet included interested parties as well as student leaders. The facility is now included in the Action Plan for Kaikohe. The facility involves an upgrade of the cottage located on the college grounds. Labour has been volunteered, and the need is now focussed on materials and sponsorship donations.

    • Bruce thanked Andrea for her informative talk. Assistance from the club will be considered.

  • Sue closed the meeting with the comment: “Work fascinates me. I can sit and watch it for hours”.
